Developed skills and lines of research
Guido Antonelli received his Ph.D. in Experimental Medicine from the University of Pisa in 1988. Since 2013 he has been full professor of Microbiology, Department of Molecular Medicine, Sapienza University, Rome. He is in charge of the Unit of Microbiology and Virology and the Department of Diagnostic Medicine – La Sapienza University Hospital Policlinico Umberto I, Rome. His research interest was initially focused on the in vivo and in vitro mechanism of interferon production and action. His group’s research currently focuses on the pathogenesis, control and diagnosis of viral infections, particularly respiratory viruses, HIV, HCV and HPV. For cystic fibrosis, he is involved in identifying patients most at risk of developing severe respiratory complications based on the profile of interferon response. To date, his scientific output has more than 6,000 citations.
