Developed skills and lines of research

Federica Briani graduated in Biological Sciences from the University of Milan in 1992 and earned her Ph.D. in Genetic Sciences in 1996. Since 2018, she has been affiliated with the Department of Biosciences at the University of Milan as an Associate Professor. The most significant part of her scientific career has been carried out in the laboratory of Prof. Gianni Dehò, with whom she continues to collaborate, within the Department of Biomolecular Sciences and Biotechnology at the University of Milan. She has also conducted research at the TIGEM (Telethon) in Milan and in the laboratory of Prof. P. Régnier at the Institut de Biologie Physico-Chimique in Paris.

Her main research focus has been on studying the regulation of gene expression in prokaryotes. Her work has clarified significant aspects of the activity, physical and functional interaction with other proteins, and the physiological role of these proteins in the bacterium Escherichia coli. This knowledge is now being applied to the treatment of Pseudomonas aeruginosa infections in cystic fibrosis by repurposing antibacterial agents previously used in other medical contexts. She is the author of over 30 publications in peer-reviewed international journals and the recipient of the 2014 European Discovery Fast Track Challenge by GlaxoSmithKline.
