Developed skills and lines of research
Santiago Ramón García has been an Associate Research Professor at the Fundación Agencia Aragonesa para la Investigación y el Desarrollo (ARAID) since 2017. He is a co-principal investigator of the D2AMR group and carries out his professional activities at the University of Zaragoza (Department of Microbiology, Faculty of Medicine).
He is currently responsible for WP2 (in vitro profiling) within the ERA4TB consortium and coordinator of the largest clinical trial in Africa aimed at improving treatment for Buruli ulcer, a neglected tropical disease.
He earned his PhD in Molecular Microbiology in 2006 from the University of Zaragoza (UNIZAR) under the supervision of Dr. José A. Aínsa and Dr. Carlos Martín. From 2007 to 2010, he conducted postdoctoral studies at the University of British Columbia (UBC), Canada, under the supervision of Prof. Charles J. Thompson, during which he held an associate researcher position at UBC.
In the field of cystic fibrosis (CF), Prof. Ramón-García has contributed to the development of the new drug VOMG, currently in preclinical development, and to understanding how approved drugs can be repurposed for treating infections caused by non-tuberculous mycobacteria.
With over 20 years of experience in antimicrobial research, Prof. Ramón-García has worked in both academic institutions (University of Zaragoza, Spain; University of Pavia, Italy; University of Padua, Italy; and UBC, Canada) and industry (GlaxoSmithKline). He has gained extensive knowledge of antimicrobial resistance and the drug discovery and development process, spanning basic science to clinical translational research.
