Developed skills and lines of research

Onofrio Laselva is a fixed-term researcher at the Department of Clinical and Experimental Medicine of the University of Foggia.

He earned his degree in Biomedical Sciences from the University of Bari in 2012, where his thesis focused on studying membrane proteins in respiratory cells, with a particular emphasis on those involved in cystic fibrosis (CF). After working in Prof. Margarida Amaral’s laboratory in Lisbon, he began his PhD in Functional and Applied Genomics and Proteomics at the University of Bari in 2017.

During this period, he spent a year at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto (Canada) in Professor Christine Bear’s laboratory, studying the mechanism of action of CFTR modulators. He completed his postdoctoral research there, focusing on personalized therapy using nasal epithelial cells and intestinal organoids derived from pluripotent stem cells of individuals with CF.

His current research combines approaches in pathophysiology, biochemistry, molecular biology, and microbiology to determine the role of infection, inflammation, and oxidative stress in the efficacy of CFTR modulators.

Projects funded by FFC Ricerca as Principal Investigator or as Research Manager

FFC#4/2024
A personalized repurposing approach based on antinflammatory/antioxidant treatment to increase the efficacy of CFTR modulators

FFC#6/2021
Enhancing the prediction of clinical responses to CFTR modulators by in vitro assays using patient-derived tissues under conditions mimicking native status of CF airways
