RESULTS

Depression and anxiety are among the most frequent comorbidities reported in cystic fibrosis (CF), and depression and parental anxiety can influence therapeutic adherence and clinical outcomes. Personality traits and attachment styles can influence the course of underlying psychiatric and medical conditions.
The present study aimed to study which psychological aspects contribute to the development of mood disorders and anxiety in people with CF, and impact negatively for the adherence and the clinical course. Temperament is significant for the personalization of care in CF.
Researchers have used psychological questionnaires addressed to adolescents (from 14 years old) and their parents, and also to adults. Moreover, different clinical data are registered.
All the data derived from the questionnaires and clinical data were collected in two different phases: at the beginning of the study and after one year. All the data have been processed through statistical analysis, and consequently, the results obtained have been related. This has allowed a more in-depth knowledge of the psychological conditions of people with CF.
This project made it possible to highlight how some psychological factors are more subject to change, in particular about conditions of anxiety and depression. Therefore monitoring mental health over time and specific treatment interventions are necessary for best management. Finally, temperament and other personality factors are crucial to appropriate care in CF. The study will be the subject of further publications to constitute a reference for the scientific community, representing a first exploratory investigation on aspects related to personality and temperament in people with CF, and will allow further in-depth research.
